Living in a state of reactivity because of past trauma is incredibly challenging. The echoes of past wounds often manifest in immediate and intense emotional responses, creating a constant sense of fear, vulnerability, and discomfort. It taxes the nervous system so that practically no environment feels safe. The traumatized body learns to detect threat where there is none, which can lead to the development of personality disorders such as PTSD. This means nearly every interaction can feel like navigating a minefield, where the fear of retriggering old wounds looms large. Because it is human nature to protect the self, the body's reaction to a traumatic event is to become more sensitive, more responsive, more aware. It is a reflex and survival strategy that has allowed humans to survive for centuries. The goal isn't to eliminate the reflex. It is to inform the body that safety has returned through trauma therapy.

At Healing Our Trauma, I am dedicated to fostering emotional well-being, rebuilding connections, and guiding individuals, couples and families toward a path of healing and personal growth. I treat all types of complex trauma stemming from events such as substance abuse, sexual assault, sexual abuse, childhood abuse, civil unrest, domestic violence, negative beliefs, ptsd symptoms, natural disaster, or other various ways trauma survivors experience trauma. My therapeutic setting unique values rest on three pillars:
I invite every client to show up as their real, authentic self and I make every effort to do the same. I welcome your personality, your culture, your quirks. No need to shrink yourself or code switch. You are never too much and always enough. My authentic trauma therapy and specific approach provides a safe space for all your parts, particularly the ones you've had to hide or diminish.
Of course, trust is paramount. I prioritize creating a confidential and non-judgmental space where you can express yourself freely. Beyond that, I prioritize emotional safety by never forcing clients to disclose information they don't want to.
My approach to therapy goes beyond talk therapy. It includes somatic, movement-based, and inner child/parts work to treat the entire person. I am always working to decolonize my approach as much as possible.
I believe wholeheartedly in the power of collective healing. This includes emphasizing the importance of additional support through family, friends and or group work. As the popular saying goes, "trauma happens in isolation, but healing happens in community."
What I know of the human spirit is that we are all resilient and we are all in need of healing. No one gets through life without experiencing some level of pain, loss, rejection, abandonment, regret, shame, or anger leaving traumatic memories. It's pretty hard to handle. Thankfully, we don't have to do it alone. One of my life's passions is walking alongside my clients on their healing journeys, helping them reframe and re-story their experiences and beliefs. I am not here to pathologize your behavior or tell you what's wrong with you. (You've probably already had enough of that.) I'm here to help you churn to the surface from the effects of trauma and what you're carrying and believing. I'm here to help you "get into your body," meaning recognize and honor the feelings you've suppressed or dissociated. I'm here to help you process the experiences that have haunted you and held you back, blocked your emotional and personal growth, and reduce or eliminate syptoms of trauma in your life. So let me ask you, who would you be without your trauma? What life would you be living and what feelings would you be experiencing? THAT is what you want to achieve and be present in the present moment in the Kansas City area.

The only insurance I accept at this time is Aetna (Missouri.) All other clients are private pay. For those who do not have Aetna, I can provide you with a superbill you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement through their out-of-network benefits. Consult your insurance company before to ensure they provide out-of-network benefits.
Sessions are $150/60-min hour. Family and couples sessions are $180.
Yes. Sessions can be either in person or online. In-person sessions are held in Independence, Mo. Online sessions are held on Zoom.
Clients are free to choose the frequency of their sessions. I recommend that those experiencing moderate to severe distress due to the effects of trauma should come to sessions weekly. Those with mild distress or simply seeking life clarity should come biweekly.
The answer to this question varies from person to person, but a general answer is that therapy could be useful if you or others notice that your mental health symptoms are interfering with your functioning. For example, if you’re so sad, angry, or worried that you’re not able to go to work or school, or if you keep having trouble in your personal relationships because of your behavior. Lastly, if you have persistent feelings of sadness or anger that are lasting longer than usual (a week or so), a form of therapy is likely a good choice for you.
Generally, no. Sometimes I will see children on a case but case basis, but my main client population is made up of adults dealing with adult or childhood trauma.
